TANGO OF THE AMERICAS

Tango of the Americas is the Pan American Symphony Orchestra’s first CD despite its 15 plus years performing tango in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. The orchestra was founded by Argentine Maestro Sergio Alessandro Buslje because he saw a gap in the nation’s concert hall repertoire. Music by Latin American composers was rarely performed. Since then, the orchestra, known as PASO, has premiered new works by our Southern neighbors and regularly performed music by Latin American greats such as Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and Argentine Alberto Ginastera. But where PASO has really made its mark on the concert scene is with its sell-out tango shows – spectacular high-energy performances of traditional tangos and nuevo tangos, many arranged by Maestro Buslje himself.

“I really wanted to make this recording”, recounts Maestro Buslje, “because I feel strongly that we as tango musicians have to keep tango fresh and vibrant so it stays alive another hundred years or so. Over the years, I’ve worked with some of the best of the new generation of tango musicians and it always pleases me to learn they are writing new pieces to contribute to the existing repertoire. Last summer, I decided to select some of the best new tangos I’ve heard and make a recording I can share with the wider public. The tangos you will hear on this CD are complex, melodic, jazzy, innovative, and unmistakably tango!” This unique recording offers listeners a variety of tango music, including a few of Maestro Buslje’s favorites by well-known Argentine composers Piazzolla, Libertella, and Requena. From Washington, DC, PASO introduces you to an exciting array of new tangos from Colombia, Argentina, and the United States!
