Maria de Buenos Aires is a genre-bending tango-oratorio that is hauntingly seductive and surreal first performed in Washington, DC in 1996 by PASO.   Composed in 1968 by Astor Piazzolla with poetic metaphorical lyrics by librettist Horacio Ferrer, Maria de Buenos Aires is a captivating work set to the passionate rhythms of nuevo tango.  Maria was born in the slums of Buenos Aires, Argentina "on a day that God was drunk... with a curse in her voice."  She passionately longs for freedom. Rejecting innocent love, she becomes seduced by the streets, pulled into the seedy underworld. Maria is both prostitute and virgin, sleepwalking through scenes of violence, her own burial, dreamlike confessions to psychoanalysts, her own resurrection, and finally giving birth to a new version of herself.  After 21 years, PASO performs this beautiful music with its hallucinatory lyrics with an all Argentine cast:  Mariana Quinteros as Maria; Martin de Leon as the Dreamy Sparrow and the Gaucho Minstrel, Hugo Medrano as the Poet Goblin and Drunk.  Also starring a talking choir of psychoanalysts and Argentine bandoneon player, Rodolfo Zanetti, this is a gripping show you will not want to miss!

Masters of Contemporary Tango

Friday, December 16, 2016 at 8 PM
Embassy of Argentina, 1600 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20009

It was Astor Piazzolla who really shook up the tango, starting in the 1950's when he incorporated jazz and classical influences into traditional tango music. Then followed similar nuevo tango compositions from Piazzolla's contemporaries, such as Horacio Salgan and Raul Garello. As nuevo tango gained popularity throughout the world, a younger generation grew up playing Piazzolla's music and composing their own tangos.  Octavio Brunetti, a talented young tango pianist, was one of the these who composed in the 2000's until his untimely death in 2014. Tonight's concert includes works by Garello, Salgan, Piazzolla, and Brunetti.

Admission - $30; advance purchase necessary; no ticket sales at the door.  Admission includes free Argentine wine reception.
