Antologia de la Zarzuela

George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st Street, NW.

Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 7 PM

Reserved seating; Admission $35, 40, $45, $50. For ticket information, call 202-994-6800.

The Pan American Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of Washington Chamber Chorus join forces to bring you a sensational show of zarzuela favorites—Antologia de la Zarzuela (Zarzuela Anthology) and other musical treasures from Spain. Zarzuela is Spain’s equivalent of the Viennese operetta, with serious or comic plots that are usually nationalistic in theme. But unlike the Austrian operettas where the protagonists are usually aristocrats, zarzuelas depict everyday people with stories rooted in the politics of their times.

Zarzuelas had their heyday in Spain at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries and Antologia de la Zarzuela offers a varied selection of songs from the most well-known zarzuela composers of this Golden Age, such as Joaquin Breton, Ruperto Chapi, Federico Moreno Torroba, Manuel de Falla, and others. With the Pan American Symphony Orchestra, a chamber choir, four vocal soloists, and a flamenco dancer, this show promises a spectacular array of the big moments from the best of Spain’s zarzuelas. Also featured in this show are works from Spain's greatest composers of the 20th century, such as Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albeniz.

Masters of Contemporary Tango

Friday, December 16, 2016 at 8 PM
Embassy of Argentina, 1600 New Hampshire Avenue NW, Washington, DC

It was Astor Piazzolla who really shook up the tango, starting in the 1950's when he incorporated jazz and classical influences into traditional tango music. Then followed similar nuevo tango compositions from Piazzolla's contemporaries, such as Horacio Salgan and Raul Garello. As nuevo tango gained popularity throughout the world, a younger generation grew up playing Piazzolla's music and composing their own tangos.  Octavio Brunetti, a talented young tango pianist, was one of the these who composed in the 2000's until his untimely death in 2014. Tonight's concert includes works by Garello, Salgan, Piazzolla, and Brunetti.

Admission - $30; advance purchase necessary; no ticket sales at the door.  Admission includes free Argentine wine reception.
